Why Bother to Report
Spotting malicious content online is just one part of the puzzle. Equally important is knowing what to do when you encounter it. Incident reporting plays a crucial role in cybersecurity, allowing you to notify authorities or relevant platforms about security breaches, suspicious activities, or cyberattacks. Doing this helps the company take down the malicious content and thereby helping to protect others so they don’t fall victim to this type of content.
So, here’s how you can take action and report:
Forward Suspicious Emails
If you stumble upon a suspicious email, don’t just delete it, report it! One could do this by either reporting it to the email provider or Forwarding the email to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at reportphishing@apwg.org. You can also read more about them at https://apwg.org/reportphishing/. They’re on the front lines battling phishing scams and cybercrime. Plus, including screenshots or descriptions of the suspicious content can provide valuable context for investigators.
Report Fraudulent Websites
If you come across a fraudulent website, don’t leave it unchecked. Report it to Google Safe Browsing. Visit their reporting page at https://safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/ and provide details about the suspicious site. Your report can help prevent others from falling victim to scams or identity theft.
Social Media Scams
Social media platforms are not immune to scams. If you encounter suspicious activity or fraudulent accounts, report them immediately. Most platforms have built-in reporting features to flag inappropriate content or scams. Your report can prompt platform administrators to take swift action, removing harmful content and protecting other users from potential harm. Every platform has its way of reporting, but most of them follow the same pattern.

Government Reporting Platforms
Many countries have dedicated platforms for reporting cybercrime. Check with your local authorities or cybersecurity agencies for guidance on how to report security incidents. Your report can contribute to broader efforts to combat cybercrime and enhance cybersecurity measures.
Why is reporting so important?
Well, think of it this way: Every report contributes to a safer online environment for everyone. By reporting suspicious activities or cyberattacks, you’re not only protecting yourself but also helping to safeguard others from potential harm. Your actions can lead to the swift removal of malicious content, preventing further damage and minimising the impact on individuals and businesses alike. Additionally, reporting can have long-term effects. Suppose a phishing scam is reported frequently enough. In that case, email providers can flag it as phishing and block it from appearing in inboxes, effectively neutralising the threat and making the internet safer for everyone.
So, don’t hesitate to speak up and report any security incidents you encounter online. Together, we can make the Internet a safer place.
